외국인과 의사소통을 자유롭게 하는 방법을 배우고 싶어 필리핀 어학연수를 선택하게 되었다. 말하기가 느는방법은 무엇보다 자연스러운 상황에서 말을 많이 해보는 것이라고 생각한다. 이러한 측면에서 이번 키스톤 어학원에서의 수업은 나에게 많은 도움이 된 것 같아 만족스럽다. 수빅-키스톤 어학원 수업은 매일 8시간씩 1:1수업과 1:4 그룹수업으로 다양한 주제에 대해 이야기를 한다. Speaking부터 Reading, Writing, Presentation, Debate 등 다양한 방법으로 수업이 진행된다.

하지만 1:1 수업이 주가 되기 때문에 이러한 수업과목과 상관없이 선생님과 상의하여 자신이 원하는 방향으로 수업을 이끌어갈 수 있다는 점이 좋았다. 나는 교과서 속 형식적인 대화를 배우거나 문장을 따라 읽는 수업이아닌, 공통관심사나 사회적 이슈에 대해서 이야기하는 수업을 주로 해달라고 부탁하여 대부분의 수업을 Speaking에 초점 맞췄다. 한달이라는 시간이 영어실력을 늘이기에 턱없이 부족한 시간이지만 한달동안 의식적으로 영어로 말하는 것에 초점 맞춰 수업을 하니 외국인과의 소통에 있어 두려움이 많이 사라진 것 같다.

또한 하루에 3시간 정도있는 그룹 수업도 좋았다. 그 중 Debate 수업과 Presentation 수업이 기억에 남는다. Debate 수업에서 논쟁거리에 대해 토론을 할 때, 나의 의견을 남들에게 잘 피력하기 위해 단어와 문장에 대해 다양하게 생각하고 말을 하려고 노력하며 말하기가 많이 트인 거 같다. 또 Presentation 수업에서도 남들 앞에서 잘 이야기하는 방법, 이야기를 풍부하게 하는 방법 등에 대해 구체적으로 배울 수 있어 좋았다.

그리고 부원장 선생님의 도움으로 어학연수를 하는 동안 바학바학초등학교에서 교육봉사를 할 수 있는 기회가 생겼었다. 필리핀 초등학교에서의 교육봉사는 나에게 잊을 수 없는 추억이자 따뜻한 경험이 되었다. 초등학교에서 한국어와 한국전통놀이에 대해 수업을 했는데 한국에서의 교육실습과는 또 다른 느낌이었다. 영어로 수업을 하는 건 처음이라 너무 떨리고 걱정도 됐는데, 막상 수업을 하니 떨림보다는 즐겁고 행복한 감정이 크게 다가왔다. 아이들이 한국어를 배울 때, 공책에 따라적으면서까지 관심을 갖는 모습이 너무 귀엽고 고마웠다. 하룻동안 아이들에게 따뜻한 에너지를 너무 많이 받아서 행복했던 시간이었다. 이처럼 필리핀 어학연수는 영어를 배우는 것도 의미가 있었지만 키스톤 어학원의 선생님 그리고 바학바학초등학교의 아이들과의 인연 맺을 수 있었던 좋은 추억이었다.

I chose to study languages in the Philippines because I wanted to learn how to communicate with foreigners. I think the most natural way to talk is to talk a lot. In this respect, I am satisfied that this class at Keystone Language Institute has helped me a lot. The Subic-Keyston language school classes talk about a variety of topics with one-on-one and one-on-four group classes, eight hours a day. Classes are taught in various ways, from speaking to reading, writing, Presentation, and Debate.

However, since 1:1 classes become the main subject, I liked that I could consult with my teacher and lead the class in the direction I wanted. I focused most of my classes on speech by asking for classes that mainly talk about common interests and social issues, not classes that learn formal dialogue in textbooks or read along with sentences. A month is not enough time to improve my English skills, but I think my fear of communicating with foreigners has disappeared because I have been focusing on speaking English consciously for a month. Also, group class which is about 3 hours a day was good. Among them, Debate and Presentation classes remain in memory. When I discuss arguments in Debate class, I think I’ve opened up a lot to talk and think about various words and sentences in order to express my opinions well to others.

Also, it was good to learn in detail how to talk well in front of others and how to enrich the story in the Presentation class. And during language training with the help of assistant principal teacher, I had a chance to do educational service at Bahakba Hak elementary school. Education service in Philippine elementary school has become an unforgettable memory and a warm experience for me.

I had a class in elementary school about the Korean language and traditional Korean play, and it felt different from my teaching practice in Korea. I was so nervous and worried because it was my first time teaching in English, but I felt more pleasant and happy than nervous. When the children were learning Korean, they were so cute and grateful to be interested in the book. It was a happy time for children to get so much warm energy. As such, learning English was meaningful, but it was a good memory to have a relationship with a teacher at Keystone Language Institute and children at Ba Hakba School.
